The Cave House is an excellent example to be able to know and understand the history and culture of the peasant population of Matera, old of thousands of years.

La Casa Grotta del Casalnuovo is composed of 5 rooms excavated on three levels, with attached barn and cellar. The environments are:

  • the court, the original entrance of the house

  • the big room, the original core of the house excavated

  • the fireplace, the area in which people cooked the food and was also used for sleeping

  • the barn, includes 4 positions and relative troughs carved into the rock

  • the cellar, the lower area of ​​the house

  • the ice house, ice reserves

Inside you can admire the furniture and original household tools can always be felt until 1958.

 

At the exit of the cave you will find a house stocked book shop and a handicraft shop-laboratory in which visitors can buy ceramic products made entirely by hand.

 

 You can also find refreshment in the adjacent drinking a cup of coffee and use of toilets available to visitors.

Opening time

from April to October every day from 9.30 am to 19.30 pm.

from November to March every day from 9.30 to 17.30 pm.
